Minesweeper Keyboard Shortcuts: Complete Reference Guide
Most Minesweeper players only use a mouse. But learning keyboard shortcuts — or combining keyboard with mouse — can significantly speed up your gameplay.
This guide covers keyboard controls for online Minesweeper (including Minesweeper Blast), classic Windows Minesweeper, and the competition-standard tools used by world record holders.
Online Minesweeper Keyboard Shortcuts
Browser-based Minesweeper games vary in their keyboard support. Here are the most common controls:
Common Controls
| Shortcut | Action |
|---|---|
| F2 or R | Start a new game |
| 1 | Switch to Beginner difficulty |
| 2 | Switch to Intermediate difficulty |
| 3 | Switch to Expert difficulty |
| Space | Flag/unflag the selected square |
| Enter | Reveal the selected square |
| Arrow keys | Navigate the grid |
Mouse Controls (Universal)
| Action | Control |
|---|---|
| Reveal a square | Left-click |
| Flag a square | Right-click |
| Chord (reveal neighbors) | Click on a satisfied number |
| Quick restart | Click the smiley/reset button |
For a full explanation of chording, see our dedicated guide. Chording is the single most impactful technique for improving speed.
Classic Windows Minesweeper (Windows 3.1–7)
The original Windows Minesweeper had minimal keyboard support:
| Shortcut | Action |
|---|---|
| F2 | New game |
| F1 | Help |
| Xyzzy + Shift + Enter | Easter egg: single pixel in top-left corner indicates mine proximity |
The famous “xyzzy” cheat: type xyzzy, press Shift+Enter, and the top-left pixel of the screen changes to white when hovering over a safe square and black when hovering over a mine. This only works in the Windows 95/98/ME versions.
Microsoft Minesweeper (Windows 10/11)
The modern Microsoft Minesweeper has more keyboard support:
| Shortcut | Action |
|---|---|
| F2 | New game |
| F5 | Restart current game |
| Arrow keys | Navigate the grid |
| Space | Reveal selected square |
| F | Flag selected square |
| M | Toggle mark (question mark) |
Competition Tools: Minesweeper Arbiter
Competitive players typically use Minesweeper Arbiter or similar verified clones. These have their own keyboard shortcuts:
| Shortcut | Action |
|---|---|
| F2 | New game |
| F3 | Toggle timer display |
| F4 | Toggle counter display |
| F5 | Beginner |
| F6 | Intermediate |
| F7 | Expert |
| Esc | Cancel current game |
| Ctrl+S | Save game state |
Mouse Techniques for Speed
While keyboard shortcuts help with game management, the mouse is where speed comes from. Competitive players focus on these mouse techniques:
1. Chording (Most Important)
Chording — clicking on a satisfied number to reveal all unflagged neighbors — is the single biggest time-saver. Without chording, you must click each safe square individually. With chording, one click can reveal 3–5 squares at once.
2. NF (No-Flag) Style
Advanced players sometimes skip flagging entirely. Instead of right-clicking to flag and then chording, they simply left-click every safe square. This eliminates:
- Right-click time for each flag
- The mental overhead of deciding when to flag vs when to click
NF is faster for experienced players but harder to learn. Most beginners should use flags until they internalize all the patterns.
3. 1.5-Click Chording
Some Minesweeper implementations support a combined flag+chord in fewer clicks:
- Left-click and hold on a number
- Right-click while holding left — this flags the target square
- Release left — this chords if the number is now satisfied
This technique combines flagging and chording into a fluid motion, saving significant time on boards with many chording opportunities.
4. Mouse Path Optimization
Competitive players plan their mouse path to minimize total distance traveled:
- Clear one section completely before moving to the next
- Chord as early as possible to open up more of the board
- Avoid backtracking across the grid
Mobile Controls
On phones and tablets, Minesweeper uses touch controls:
| Action | Touch Control |
|---|---|
| Reveal a square | Tap |
| Flag a square | Long-press (hold ~0.5 seconds) |
| Chord | Tap a satisfied number |
| Zoom | Pinch to zoom (on larger boards) |
| Pan | Drag to scroll the board |
Tips for Mobile Play
- Use landscape mode for Expert boards — more squares visible at once
- Zoom in on the active area to avoid mis-taps
- Tap decisively — hesitant taps can register as long-press (flag)
- Mobile play is inherently slower than mouse — do not compare your mobile times to desktop times
Customizing Controls
Browser Settings
Most browser-based Minesweeper games do not allow custom keybindings, but you can adjust your browser:
- Disable right-click context menu — some browsers show a context menu on right-click that interferes with flagging. This is usually handled automatically by the game.
- Disable smooth scrolling — prevents accidental scrolling during play
- Full screen (F11) — maximizes the play area
Mouse Settings
For competitive play, consider:
| Setting | Recommendation |
|---|---|
| Mouse sensitivity | Medium-high — fast enough to cross the board quickly, controllable enough for precise clicks |
| Double-click speed | Default or slightly faster |
| Pointer acceleration | Off — consistent movement helps build muscle memory |
| Mouse pad | Large, smooth pad for consistent tracking |
Keyboard vs Mouse: Which Is Faster?
For gameplay speed, the mouse dominates. Even with full keyboard navigation, moving square-by-square with arrow keys is far slower than direct mouse clicks. Keyboards are useful for:
- Starting new games (F2 is faster than clicking the smiley)
- Switching difficulties (number keys)
- Accessibility — players who cannot use a mouse
For the actual puzzle-solving, mouse (or touch on mobile) is the standard. The fastest Minesweeper times in the world are all achieved with a mouse.
Accessibility
Minesweeper can be played with various assistive technologies:
- Keyboard-only navigation — Arrow keys + Space/Enter on supported versions
- Screen readers — Some specialized Minesweeper implementations provide audio cues for cell states
- Switch access — Grid navigation works with switch input devices
- Large displays — Browser zoom (Ctrl+Plus) enlarges the entire board
If you need accessible Minesweeper, look for versions that explicitly support WAI-ARIA attributes and keyboard navigation.
